The Giant Devonport Orions have claimed the Cricket North West T20 men's title for the fifth time after a dominant eight-wicket win over Burnie at the Devonport Oval on Thursday night.
The result caps off a terrific T20 campaign for the team, who didn't drop a game all season, and adds to their success in the short form of the game in 2011/12, 2014/15, 2019/20 & 2022/23.
In front of a great crowd at the Oval, the Orions were asked to bowl first by Hurricanes captain Tyler Johns, and wasted no time in making early inroads to the visitors line-up as Toby Bellchambers struck twice in consecutive balls in the opening over.
Nick Revell and Ollie Walker led the Burnie fightback with a 45-run stand to take the score to 2-47 before Revell's attempt at a quick single ended with being run out by Dilan Sandagirigoda and Prasith Sudusinghe for 28.
From there, the Orions various spin options made sure the Hurricanes innings never reached any lofty heights in the back half of the innings, restricting them to 7-120 from their 20 overs.
In reply, the hosts made a quick start thanks to a 27-ball innings of 36 from Sandagirigoda at the top of the order before coach Miles Barnard (27 off 40 balls) and Will Bennett (27 not out from 32 balls) steadily chipped away at the target with great running between wickets.
Barnard departed 24 runs short of the target, allowing Bennett and Asad Zulfiqur (14 off 12 balls) to cruise to victory with nine balls to spare.
Bellchambers was named man of the match for his opening spell and overall figures of 3-19 off 4 overs.
