Devonport Orions News

A bit of everything over the weekend for all Orions teams.

There were plenty of up's and down's for all Devonport Orions teams over the weekend, with inclement weather also playing a part.

At the Devonport Oval, the 1st Grade team suffered a disappointing 33-run loss to traditional rivals Latrobe.  Heavy overnight rain saw the start of play delayed until 1.15pm, with the game reduced to a 38-over-a-side affair.
Batting first, the Demons posted a highly competitive 6-171, with Scott Mitchell and Oliver Robinson claiming two wickets apiece. In reply, the Orions made a solid start, reaching 2-102, before losing regular wickets as they tried to lift the run rate. The team lost 8-36, to be all out for 138 after 35 overs. Tyler Dell again showed his talent with 45 at the top of the order, with Scott Mitchell making 27.

The team travelled to Wynyard on Sunday for the opening round of the CNW T20 competition, coming away with a win and a loss in its opening two games.
Game one was against Wynyard, with the Orions making 7-122 off its 20 overs. It was a slow start in the opening stages of the innings until new recruit Stuart Plunkett showed what he was capable of with a blistering 57 off 34 balls, including five 6's.
But the Blues launched into the Orions bowling attack in reply, chasing down the target with 21 balls to spare thanks to 75 from Nick Granger.
Game two followed straight after against Sheffield, and the team showed an improved batting display to post a target of 139 with Miles Barnard (45) and Plunkett (40no) leading the way.
The Orions bowling attack kept things tight in the Sheffield innings, restricting them to 121, with Ollie Robinson claiming three wickets in the final over.

Second Grade looked to keep their unbeaten start to the season going, but had to settle with a draw against Sheffield with rain washing the game out before a ball was bowled.

Under 17's took on reigning premiers Ulverstone at Devonport Oval, and could only manage a score of 100, with Brock Bucknell (32) top scoring.
Ulverstone were made to work hard for their win, passing the score for the loss of six wickets with Eli Sheean claiming 2-21 off six overs.

Under 15's went down to Wynyard by six runs in a low-scoring thriller at Byard Park. Two wickets apiece to Sam Underwood, Lachlan Berwick and Josh Aikman saw the Blues dismissed for 65
But the Orions batsmen couldn't back up the good work by the bowlers, dismissed for 59 in the 35th over.

Under 13's got their season underway with a five wicket win over Sheffield at Maidstone Park.

The women's team came close to a win against Latrobe, but were soundly beaten by Launceston in their T20 Gala Day at Latrobe.
