Summarised Club History The Devonport Cricket Club first joined the North Western Tasmanian Cricket Association in 1951/52 based at its current home at The Oval, Fenton Street, Devonport. The Club’s first President was J.J. Andrew and his influence was significant in the original formation of the Club. Since its involvement in cricket in the state the Club has hosted many significant games ranging from intrastate series games to International games against touring International sides to Sheffield Shield games to Mercantile Mutual 1 Day games culminating in the biggest game held at the Oval – the 1 day International game held in 1986 between England and the West Indies. The Club has always been at the forefront in developing junior talent in the area and the introduction of Rohan Kanhai the West Indian player and Billy Ibadulla from Pakistan certainly laid the foundations for the Club’s Junior Development Programmes. These junior programs have lead to a total of sixteen players representing Tasmania at a junior level. During the 1999/2000 season the Club decided on a change to its identity in the community by aligning itself to early maritime history in the area by changing the name of the Club to the Devonport Orions. The new name being after a vessel that was built at Woods Point in 1899 by William Holyman which sailed across the Bass Strait for several years with both passengers and supplies. The Club shared its current Clubrooms with the Devonport Football Club for several years up until 1977 when the Football Club moved to their new premises. The Club is indeed very fortunate to have such great facilities and is indebted to the Council for their contribution and upkeep over the years. The Oval itself is without doubt as good as any playing arena in the State and the Club’s outdoor practice facilities are also as good as any in the state with the exception of Bellerive. The Club’s indoor facility is also instrumental in being to develop players either during the off season or on wet training nights. The Club has been very fortunate over the years to have had a total of fourteen players of such a calibre that they have represented Tasmania at First Class level which has no doubt been a contributing factor in the on field success in the NWTCA competition, with the Club securing twelve First Grade and seventeen Second Grade premierships. |
